Vijay vs Ajith – Who is the winner?

The rate was 200 INR for first day show five years before. It’s at 2000 INR today. Seriously?? Is this expenditure worth spending? Please do not spend a lot of money in theaters for entertainment. Unknowingly, we are hurting ourselves because of this spending. Let’s see how.

We are human beings. Entertainment is part of our life. What happens when we spend too much money on entertainment? To spend on it, we must earn extra money. It becomes a chain reaction. It increases the price of everything around us. Everyone increases the price to be able to accommodate this entertainment in their own life.

Price increase in day-to-day spending - Grocery price increase, Medicine price increase, doctor fee increase, increase in bribe and what not? Where this extra money that we earn goes? To distributors, producers, Ajith, Vijay and so many such stars. What happens next? These further increase their remuneration from 100C to 120C. Producers spend 120C for the actor’s pay and another 50C for making the movie. They spend 170C total. They fix the movie ticket price at 2000 INR for the first few days. They want to take back the money before the review comes out and before people realize that it’s not worth it. You may need to think is that worth spending a lot to give them such remuneration?

On the other side, you will also lose variety and good stories. By welcoming these stars, we indirectly promote masala movies and the same kind of movies (Aracha maava thiruppi arraikum padangal) – one hero, one heroine, one villain and 5 songs. The giant producers & distributors will thrive, and it will not be a level playing field for other small budget movies and small-scale producers/distributors.

Let’s take Red Giant for example. They have power and money, and they are simply doing monopoly in Tamil cinema today. Is Udhayanidhi a politician or an actor or a producer or a distributor? If he’s a good politician, I respect him. If he’s a good actor/producer/distributor, I can clap for him.

Let’s decrease the demand by not going to theaters in the first few weeks of release. What will happen? The stars will get less paid. The movie ticket price will come down. Popcorn & Ice cream price will come down. It will become affordable for everyone. No pressure for a middle class to earn extra money to spend on such entertainment.

Conclusion:

1.      Do not idolize cinema stars. Do not get confused with Politics and Cinema. They are entirely different. Just see them as mere actors who entertain you for couple of hours. If you really like them, just clap for them, and get out of the theater.

2.      Do not pour milk on cut-outs and waste resources.

3.      Do not get extremely excited and fight for them. Just be yourself. Do not lose your life out of over excitement. Your life is more worth than this worthless excitement.

Tell me now, who is the winner. Everyone wins but we the poor people are the ultimate losers!

Your comments are welcome.

Introspection on Caste, Religion and Indian Reservation System

Hope you remember the script in the first page of all our Tamil books,

தீண்டாமை ஒரு பாவச்செயல்
தீண்டாமை ஒரு பெருங்குற்றம்
தீண்டாமை ஒரு மனிதத்தன்மையற்ற செயல்

I see we talk and share about all the discrimination in our society. Is there a day where you have introspected where it first started? Do we really know what the root of this issue is?

Here is my introspection!

I invited my friends and well-wishers for the house warming ceremony. During the function, I was asked this question privately pointing to another invitee. ‘How do you know him?’ I responded, ‘I know him as we belong to the same caste’. The next question to me was, ‘Why are you like this even after coming to America.’ I did not respond to it, because I did not know what to respond. I was not actually offended by that question at all, however I just gave it a thought. ‘Did I just say anything wrong?’ I asked myself. I wish I asked these questions in return. ‘Why do we get along with people mostly from India? That too, why do we get along with Tamilians?’

That’s when these thoughts dragged me back to my school days. How did this caste and religion get into my mind? The same educational system which taught me - untouchability is a sin, untouchability is a crime, and untouchability is inhuman - made me aware of caste based reservation system. After completing twelfth, you enter college. Students from the same area, who were educated by the same set of teachers and ranked by the same institution become incomparable when it comes to college counselling since they belong to a different class/caste. Now, it’s that time to understand what needs to be changed? It’s not the people, it’s the system where we are in.

In case of a pandemic, the whole world join hands as human to fight the virus. In case of border, we fight against the neighboring country to protect our country. When it comes to state, we fight the neighboring Karnataka and Kerala for water. When it comes to city, we argue/fight for our native place – my hometown is famous for this/that, my hometown is clean, theriyumla na Maduraikaren, appa na mattum enna Malaysia kaarana, etc. When it comes to our home, we fight any outsider in order to save our own family members. That’s our nature. That’s what we are. That’s how we are.

Whole world consists of people with differences and similarities. It’s natural human tendency that we tend to get along with people with similarities. Having said that, there is nothing to be ashamed of to live in one’s clan/group. In this case, you can fill clan with anything – it can be like-minded people, one’s nationality, one’s religion, one’s caste, one’s language, one’s state, one’s school, one’s college, one’s place of birth, one’s employer, one’s locality, it can be whatever you could think of. Being in clan is never a problem.

How do I define Caste and Religion?
It’s a division which consists of set of people who follow same traditions and rituals. It’s simply nothing more than that.

When it becomes a concern:
When one group/caste/religion tries to dominate, influence or impact the other, then it becomes a concern. We can do whatever we want provided it does not affect the other in any manner. Taken an example of an institution of forty students. Let’s introduce the reservation based on caste and religion into it. This reservation to one clan affects the chances and livelihood of another clan. That’s the problem. That’s where the differences arise.

Let’s ask these questions to ourselves. Am I the one who want to eradicate caste and religion and wish to see one India? Am I the one who use the caste based reservation in the country? If we really want to see an India above caste and religion, then the first thing affordable has to do is to compete in the open system. Do you think we can dare to do that??? 😀

You know what, many of us would have come across this scenario, where affordable clan from so called lower class reaping the benefits of the caste based reservation system say for example through scholarship, financial assistance, etc. while the unaffordable clan from so called upper class forced to take educational loan or whatever loan for that matter just to be on par with the society. If we really want to vote to bring in the equality in people, pledge to create a system where the reservations are laid out based on income rather than caste. That’s the time where people will not talk about caste and religion at least not in public.

However, I’m sure at least one day if not today, the talk about caste and religion will wane off given the gradual increase in the number of inter-caste/inter-religious marriages. Thanks to them for coming to the rescue.

Bottom line:
This article is not written to hurt others’ sentiments. Also not because of fear, anger, frustration nor out of any personal enmity. I had ingested and digested this reality fifteen years back. You or I as an individual cannot change the system other than to just live with it. The notion of this article is to just think and ask questions to ourselves before trying to change the world. There is no point in enjoying all the benefits of the reservation system on one side and voicing our thoughts against it on the other side.

Dear friends, I know this topic is very sensitive. However, one day or the other, I’ll have to voice my thought. I do not wish to die with it. I would be very pleased if you do not undermine my character because of this write up. This article is completely my personal thought which I have been thinking to write about for a long time now. Kindly forgive this poor soul who would have been affected by this system. Now, please don’t ask me which caste I belong to. Thank you.

My breakup letter err… my love letter to Cognizant

Dear Cognizant,

Our relationship dates back to third year of my college life.

College days: It is human tendency at times to do things without reason. Likewise, without really thinking on what I’m good at, I just took a course in Engineering during my graduation hoping that everything would fall in place. However, while I was in my third year, I simply had no idea what I was going to do further. Thank God, I was sane at least to choose a reputed institution that had placements. Having said that, my only hope was to get placed into a software industry. Adding further to my angst, there was only one organization that entrusted in us – Biotechnology graduates and it was none other than you.

As I was one among the top ten in my class, you were so generous that you did not even ask me to take the aptitude test and I was directly made to sit in the interview. Moreover at the interview, I had no clue if you were so partial recruiting me in less than fifteen minutes because I don’t think my smartness reflected on my face. Nevertheless, being recruited into a reputed organization, I was able to walk in front of the crowd with my head held high. You know what! – That day I called to each and every number in my address book and shared the Happy news with every person I knew.

Career: I could not imagine how my life would have been if I was not recruited at the first place. You provided me with solid platform to improve on something that I felt never existed. I’m more than happy to admit that I didn’t even know the basics of computers during my initial days, but you named me as ‘software engineer’ and made me learn things in a steady phase.

Standard of living and dream to travel: My standard of living moved from average to fair because of you. Without owing money to third parties, I was able to perform my sister’s wedding with the sum you paid for my work. Since my childhood, I had an obsession for flights and dream to travel. That dream became true when I hopped into my first flight and travelled to another country outside of India for the very first time. It all happened because of you.

Personal growth: You had your office located away from my home and it made me to travel in train for more than three hours a day which in turn helped me to read the newspaper daily. That transformed me into a better individual and it also had a great impact on my communication. Hence, if you were not there I would have never known that I can communicate effectively and write interestingly. Adding on to that, I carried out the tasks assigned at office in the day time and used the leisure time left in the night to read, write and to do things that interest me. It gave me peace of mind and satisfaction to start the next day afresh.

Internal blogs and webinars: You induced my creativity by making me read and contribute towards the internal blogs. My self-belief stood at its peak whenever I got appreciated for my post. You also taught me through the webinars on how to be independent, how to be self-conscious and health conscious, how to manage one’s personal life, how to live at peace, etc.

Infrastructure and entertainment:  At times I feel mesmerized looking at the ‘huge’ building where I work. The security and safety features are just awesome. The admins carry out their tasks in the given time and maintain the facilities in a great manner. And I love travelling in the late night cabs with its lively music station turned on. Whenever I felt tired, there were carom and table tennis in all floors to rejuvenate me. On a lighter side, you not only provided parking space to the highly expensive attractive cars and bikes but also to my less expensive not-so-beautiful dusty rusty bicycle.

Inner voice and self-belief: Though at times I was occupied with strenuous work, you provided me the much needed breathing space to relax and listen to my increasing inner voice which led me to believe in myself that I can survive wherever I go. It’s because of you that I learnt ‘time’ is more precious than money and how to maintain work life balance by effectively managing the given time. It’s you who taught me to stimulate my grey cells to think different, act different and be different. I’m unsure if my attitude added value to you but it surely did to me. On a lighter side, you were also responsible for turning half of my black hair into grey. I’ll deal with you personally to resolve this.

Thanks for fine tuning me into perfection at work and transforming me into a better individual in life. You surrounded my way with a bunch of roses though there were some thorns along the way. However, I was happy looking at the roses strewn on me. The greatest of all, you helped me win my bread and butter. Having said all these, you mean a lot to me and I still have got millions of reasons to stick with you. Nevertheless, I have got a few ‘strong’ reasons to move away, but please never and ever come to a conclusion that I’m moving away just for the simple reason that I could make more money. It’s above and beyond that. The first and foremost, I’m moving away not because I’m unsatisfied with you but because I’m completely satisfied with you. A child being in the womb perfectly in its comfort zone for ten months jumps out through the uterus, not because it wants to ditch its mother but just because it wants to see for itself the world outside of its comfort zone. Similarly, I would like to see for myself the world outside of Cognizant, to be even more precise the world outside of my own comfort zone. Above all, I needed a change that would help me skyrocket beyond my limits. (Though hard, it’s always better to have one’s intentions high)

I’m what I’m because of you. Thanks for the trust you had on me. In spite of being cognizant of the fact, “You should love your work and not your company”, I fell in love with you, ‘Cognizant’ unconditionally. That said, with heavy heart and tear filled eyes, I would also like to say that one last word, ‘Goodbye.’ I hope I don’t weep feeling nostalgic on my last working day ‘of my office’ err… ‘at your office’.

With everlasting love,
Kannappan Ramanathan.

Last but not the least, thanks to my colleagues and friends for staying along with me in my paths of joy and sorrow. If you are not there I could never imagine surviving in this software world. Thanks for teaching me from scratch of switching on the system to developing a script in UNIX. I’m so grateful and thankful to you. And I’m sorry if I have unintentionally hurt you with my words or deeds.

Please stay in touch.

Should one be a vegetarian? What is our sixth sense?

Few days back, I went to the tailor shop to get my stitched clothes. It is not new in India; we are made to wait in all places not just because of our growing population but also due to our reluctance in not doing our duty at the right time. They told me to wait as they were yet to iron the cloth.

Half an hour passed looking here and there. There were four tailors at the shop. All of a sudden, a conversation broke out with one of them asking others, ‘What is needed for a living?’ One said, ‘I need peace in my life’. To my surprise, second one said, ‘I need the beautiful salesgirl working next door’. Another said, ‘I need money’. I smiled and thought to myself ‘Isn’t food the most important thing needed in life?’

After receiving the clothes, I returned home with deep thoughts in my mind. Other part of the brain said, ‘don’t think too much, half your hairs are already grey’. Never mind.

Why should we depend on other organisms for our food? Why don’t we produce our own food? Why should we kill animals to satisfy our hunger? Some of you, I’m sure are piping up with the point, ‘even plants are living organisms and have life, isn’t it equally sinful to destroy them for our own needs?’

These arguments drag me to my basics. The living things are divided into two major divisions, the autotrophs and the heterotrophs. Autotrophs are the living things that produce their own food. On the other hand, Heterotrophs are living things that depend on other organisms for their food. As we cannot produce our own food, we depend on other organisms for our food. In near future, who knows, chloroplast might have been incorporated into our cell to produce our own food!

It’s natural to kill other organisms for our very survival. Nobody here can say, ‘I do not harm other living creatures’. Do you think you can stop your WBC from killing the harmful microorganisms that enter the body? – Never. When our own life is in danger, it is natural that we tend to free ourselves from the clutch; it may even include much destruction process.

I like to classify living organism into four types based on human consumption, (Though Humans come under animalia, we will have them separate to better understand the article)
  1. Plants.
  2. Domestic animals.
  3. Wild animals.
  4. Human.
At the first place, we should know that we target plants and domestic animals as they are not going to harm us. Food, being a basic need, there is no other go but to depend on other living organisms. Man, the highest organism in the living chain, has the advantage to consume plants and all animals.

Why consume plants and not animals:

Here, I classify living organism based on senses they possess,
  1. Plants.
  2. Animals.
  3. Human.
As far as I remember, plants have the sense of light. Some plants also enjoy the sense of touch. Animals have the sense of sight, smell, touch, taste and hear. When compared to animals, human have an additional sense called the sixth sense.

What is the sixth sense?

Plants and animals have not changed since their arrival. They have only adapted to the environment. Plants absorb light, fix nitrogen, and produce their food. When there was no light, they extend to absorb light. Coming to animals, their main function is to locomote in search of prey and to reproduce.
Here comes the most important and highly intellectual living thing, the human. He not only does his basic function. He always does and thinks more than what needs to be done. We should agree that it has made life easier for us in one sense without denying the fact that it has made life difficult for the other living organisms that share space with us.

Apart from the five physical senses, humans have the mental sense which is more than just thinking. It makes us analyze – what is right and what is wrong, how to be social, how to respond, how to overcome a problem.

Let’s take an example of walking in very hot sun. An animal which is unable to bear the heat searches and rests in shadow. But when you take a human, he thinks how to overcome this and uses slippers to walk and umbrella to protect the whole body. To make it simple, our intellect is the sixth sense.

Plants and animals have not changed, they have only adapted to the changes in the environment brought out by natural causes and by human beings. The fittest are able to adapt, survive and others become extinct.

We are so selfish and we do not care about the other living organisms on earth. With our so called sixth sense, we have done everything possible for their destruction. We kill cockroaches and lizards at home, but how many of us know about their usefulness. They feed on insects and keep our home clean. They are also useful scavengers that clean our filth and excreta, which left uncleaned, will lead to many diseases. Many of the birds are hunted for their meat. These birds help us in many ways for our survival. They help in pollination and seed dispersal. Birds are insectivorous and keep a check on insect population. There are insect eating bats which can eat 300 mosquitoes in an hour and also keeps dengue at bay. But these bats are killed by humans for meat and superstitious beliefs. The fact is “Birds can survive without humans, but humans cannot survive without birds”.

If this continues to happen, in the longer run, there will only be one organism in this world – The Human being. Indeed, there are chances that one human is killed for the survival of another.

These problems are all due to the sixth sense of humans.

Why should one not be a non-vegetarian?

Good bye...

The incident that transformed me is the recent execution of Ajmal Kasab. Though, he was responsible for the death of many innocent people, we arrived at no solution by hanging him. Think how much pain and agony he would have undergone when taken to the death trap.

I can hear, some of you shouting at me, ‘Then what is the solution for this’. Being idealistic, I do not know the solution but I am sure hanging is not the right solution. Gandhiji pointed out, ‘An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind’. Punishment is given to reform people and to make him a better individual. But practically speaking, we have no other option other than execution as we had already run out of ideas on reforming such individuals.

This incident reminds me of my days at Puzhal Lake. We friends go there to take bath in the weekends. Everyone knew swimming except me. One day, they thought of pushing me into deep water to make me learn swimming. I begged, ‘I am happy even if I did not learn swimming in my lifetime, but for god’s sake; don’t push me into the waters’. They pushed me and that’s when I realized how terrible the ‘fear of death’ is. In fact, I knew that they would save me, but the fear of death broke me down into tears.

If you like to experience this fear, avail late night cab from your office to home. The rash driving will tell you how terrible it is. I once pleaded, ‘Please be slow, it’s ok even if I’m one hour late to home’.

I compared the jailing and execution of Kasab with capturing, breeding and killing of poor animals for their meat. I felt bad and thought I should not do this. The other thing which hurt me is killing animals for material gains. To name a few, killing of elephants for their ivory and killing of rhinos for their horns in Assam. All these things made me sick.

Plants do not have emotion which animals and humans enjoy. This is not the only reason for me getting converted into a vegetarian. Even plants have life. But when we consume vegetables and fruits, we don’t cut their roots. By cutting their leaves and branches (pruning), we are doing good for the plants which will make them grow larger and in turn produces more yield. Cutting of fruits and vegetables causes no suffering to the plants. If not cut, the fruits and vegetables become ripe, fall, get decayed by microorganisms, seeds are exposed and they germinate into new plant. On the other hand, we cage the animals. We inject growth hormones to grow them in a short time and kill them for their meat. I also agree that there are some plants that are destroyed but without any suffering.

There are animals which feed on other animals and plants to maintain the ecological balance. Unlike humans, they do so to meet their needs and not for their wants. Why should one be a vegetarian? – Vegetarians are believed to live longer and more over our parts are not designed to digest meat.
The sixth sense of human is boasting of making life easier. Yes, but at the cost of destroying the other humble creatures on earth. We not only kill animals, but we also kill our own species for the want of space, material and also in the name of caste and religion which are created to instill values in human. As told already, time is not far off where there will only be humans who are man eaters. Hope, we are not paving way for it.
Let us live and let live by doing our bit.

I know this article is bound to criticism. And criticisms are always welcome as ‘That which does not kill me makes me stronger’

On a lighter side, I wrote this article just to avoid answering the question,
‘Why have you become a vegetarian? Are you trying to impress a vegetarian girl?’

-Kannappan.
